강정호에게 찾아온 기회.

4월까지만 해도 강정호(피츠버그)는 정기적으로 타석에 들어설 수 없었다. 기회는 적었고 어떤 이들은 강정호가 차라리 트리플A로 내려가 매일 출장 기회를 얻는 것이 더 도움이 될 것이라고 주장했다.

그러나 이젠 옛날 이야기다. 강정호는 패넌트레이스의 반환점인 지금 꾸준히 타석에 들어서고 있고 수비에서도 그가 가장 편하게 느끼는 포지션을 소화하고 있다. 남은 시즌, 강정호의 거취를 알아보기 위해 지난 24일(현지시각) 현재 뉴욕 양키스에서 근무하고 있는 앤서니 문과 함께 대화를 나눴다. 그는 재미교포 2세로 현재 메이저리그에서 뛰고 있는 한국 선수들을 유심히 관찰해 왔다.

머서는 지난 20일 밀워키전에서 병살 플레이를 이끌어내던 중 카를로스 고메즈의 태클에 부상을 입으며 현재 15일 부상자 명단에 이름을 올리고 있고 9월에야 복귀가 예정돼 있다. 이미 지난 7일 조쉬 해리슨을 왼쪽 손가락 내측 측부인대로 인해 수술대로 보낸 피츠버그에겐 최악의 소식. 해리슨은 복귀까지 최소 7주가 걸릴 것으로 예상된다.

"파이어리츠는 지난달까지만 해도 내야 선수층이 두꺼웠다"고 말한 앤서니 문은 "하지만 (선수들의 줄부상으로) 더 이상은 아니다. 그나마 아라미스 라미레즈를 트레이드로 데려온 것은 탁월한 선택이었다"고 말했다. 이어 "물론 라미레즈의 전성기는 지났다. 아마 올 시즌이 끝날 때 쯤이면 팀에서 볼 수 없을지도 모른다. 그러나 닐 헌팅턴의 이번 선택은 훌륭했다. 라미레즈는 올해 그다지 많은 출루에 성공하진 못했으나 11개의 홈런과 준수한 수비를 보여준다"고 덧붙였다. 파이어리츠는 머서가 부상명단에 오른 지 2일만에 발빠른 움직임으로 요나딴 배리오스에 현금을 얹어 밀워키 브루어스로부터 라미레즈를 데려왔다.

라미레즈는 곧바로 선발로 나설 예정이며 강정호를 본인이 원하는 유격수 자리에 계속 출전시킬 것으로 보인다. 강정호는 강한 어깨와 정확한 송구 능력을 인정받았지만, 아직 수비 범위와 좌우 반응 속도에선 물음표가 달려있다.

이후 머서와 해리슨이 기존 컨디션을 되찾고 돌아온다면 머서는 원래대로 유격수 자리에 나설 것이고 해리슨과 강정호는 번갈아가며 유틸리티 포지션으로 경기를 소화할 것이 유력하다. 그러면 라미레즈는 때때로 1루 수비를 소화하며(라미레즈는 1루 수비 경험이 없다) 10월 중요한 경기에서 대타 등으로 나설 것이 유력하다.

그러나 머서와 해리슨이 돌아오기 전까진 강정호는 파이어리츠의 중심이 되는 선수다. 팀 로스터에서 가장 중요한 선수이며 까다로운 유격수 포지션을 소화할 것이다.

앞서 파이어리츠는 강정호에게 지금 보여주는 활약의 이상을 원했다. 강정호는 지난해 한국에서 40개의 홈런을 때렸지만, 미국에선 지난 17일 밀워키전에서 약 한달만에 홈런이 나올 정도로 장타 부분에선 아직 부족하다.

강정호의 지난 2개 홈런은 모두 타자 친화적 구장인 '밀러파크'와 'US셀룰러필드'에서 나왔다. 앤서니 문은 "PNC 파크의 깊은 좌측 담장은 강정호와 같이 당겨치는 히터에게는 이상적인 구장이 아니다"고 설명했다.

그럼에도 현 상황에서 강정호 정도의 파워는 팀에게 엄청난 선물이다. 강정호가 공격과 수비면에서 현재 기량을 유지하는 것만으로도 부상으로 주전 공백이 있는 팀에는 큰 힘이 된다.

앤서니 문은 "만약 강정호가 지금과 같은 활약을 펼치고 팀이 강정호에게 더 익숙해진다면, 머서가 돌아온다 하더라도 현재 유격수 포지션을 지킬 가능성이 크다"고 강조했다. 만약 강정호가 (머서의 복귀까지) 남은 기간 자신의 능력을 보여준다면 이어져 오던 경쟁 체재를 끝내고 주전 유격수로 자리 잡을 수 있는 절호의 기회다.

This is the most pivotal period of Kang Jung Ho’s career

In April, regular at-bats were not available to Jung Ho Kang. He was playing so little, some thought getting demoted to Triple-A playing every day would benefit the Korean short stop. Now, Kang is assured of getting regular at-bats in the middle of a pennant race and playing the position he is most comfortable in. To see what is ahead for Kang Jung Ho and the Pirates for the rest of the year, I’ve interviewed a current staff of the New Yankees, who have knowledge of Korean players as an Korean-American, on July 24th.

Mercer, who was taken off the field on a cart after Carlos Gomez slid into him in the second inning while trying to break up a double play, is on the 15-day DL and is out until September. Horrible news, especially after Josh Harrison had surgery July 7th to repair a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his left thumb. The Pirates estimated Harrison’s recovery time at seven weeks. 

“The Pirates had a lot of depth in the infield just a month ago but now, they are thin and trading for Aramis Ramirez was a good move,” Anthony Moon said about the current Pirates infield depth. “Ramirez isn't the player he once was, and he'll be gone at the end of the season, but this is a smart move by Neil Huntington. He hasn't reached base much this year, but he has 11 homers and still plays pretty good defense.” The Pirates acquired Aramis Ramirez and cash from the Brewers for minor league pitcher Yhonathan Barrios two days after Jordy Mercer was placed on the 15-day DL. 
Ramirez will immediately jump into the starting role at third base, with Jung-Ho Kang sticking at shortstop, the position Kang most desires to play. Kang has a strong, accurate arm, but evaluators question his lateral quickness and range at short.

When Jordy Mercer and Josh Harrison come back and both are healthy, Mercer could slide back into the starting shortstop role, likely with both Harrison and Kang going back to utility positions where they'll both still play a lot.  Ramirez then, will likely play some first base, (though he has never played first base in his career) and come off the bench for pinch-hit duties in crucial games in October.
Until Mercer and Harrison are back however, Kang Jung Ho becomes pivotal figure in Pirates' infield and possibly the most important player on the Pirates roster as he plays arguably, the most important position on the field.

Although Kang has hit well since becoming an everyday player, The Pirates are hoping for more power from the Korean star. Kang currently has five home runs after hitting 40 last year with the Nexen Heroes. Kang hit his first home run in a month Friday in Milwaukee.

Kang's last two home runs have come at hitter-friendly ballparks: Miller Park and U.S. Cellular Field. He said PNC Park's deep left field, not an ideal fit for his pull-side power, has not affected his approach.
At this point nevertheless, power is a gift. The Pirates just need Kang to perform well on the defensive side and hit like he has so far this year.

If Kang performs well and the Pirates feel more comfortable with Kang at short, he will likely be the starting short stop even after Mercer comes back. "One of them might get traded this offseason, depending on who the Pirates want to go with" Moon said. If Kang showcases he belongs to be the Pirates short stop next month or two, it will be very likely he stays as the starting short stop for years to come, ending the competition between Kang and Mercer.
