NYY 관계자가 기억하는 '마운드 밖'의 로저스

대부분의 한국 프로야구팬은 얼마 전까지만 해도 에스밀 로저스(30,한화 이글스)란 이름이 생소했을 것이다.

로저스는 메이저리그(MLB)서 7시즌 동안 활약하며 5.59의 평균자책점을 남겼다. 올 시즌 뉴욕 양키스의 유니폼을 입고 뛰며 18경기에서 불펜 투수로 경기에 나선 로저스는 33이닝 동안 6.27의 평균 자책점과 31개의 삼진, 14개의 볼넷을 기록한 평범한 투수였다.

로저스의 입지는 불과 일주일 만에 급변했다. 70만달러에 한화 이글스 유니폼을 입은 그는 다시 선발로 보직을 변경했고 지난달 6일 LG 트윈스전에 나서 완투승을 거뒀다.

한화 유니폼을 입고 나선 2번째 경기는 11일 열린 kt wiz전이었다. 이 경기에서 로저스는 공 108개로 타자들을 요리했고 완봉승을 거뒀다. 데뷔전을 시작으로 2경기 연속 완투를 펼친 건 한국프로야구 사상 처음 있는 일이다.

3번째 경기, 16일 열린 삼성전에선 7⅓이닝 동안 4실점 했으나 8명의 타자를 삼진으로 돌려세웠다. 특히 이날 나온 4점 중에서 2점은 그가 마운드를 내려온 후 나온 실점이었다.

시즌 초, 양키스에서 불펜으로 활약한 로저스지만, 그는 콜로라도에서 메이저리그에 데뷔할 당시 선발 투수로 약 2년간 뛴 경험이 있다. 이 경험을 살려 현재 한화에서 보여주는 활약상이 가능했다.

현재까지 로저스가 한국 무대에서 보여준 투구 내용은 다분히 인상적이며 앞으로도 한국 무대에서 압도적인 투구 내용을 보여줄 것으로 보인다.

로저스를 대표하는 구종은 단연 직구와 슬라이더다. 가끔 커터를 섞어 던진다. 직구 계열 구속은 평균 94마일(151km/h) 언저리에서 형성되며(로저스는 투심을 즐겨 던진다) 중간계투로 던질 땐 96마일(154km/h)까지 속도가 올라간다.

그는 주 무대를 한국으로 옮기기 전 콜로라도 로키스를 시작으로 클리블랜드 인디언스를 거쳐 토론토 블루제이스 유니폼과 뉴욕 양키스 유니폼을 입었다. 경기장에선 성공을 거둔 로저스. 마운드 밖에선 어땠을까. 미국 내 평가를 알아보기 위해 현재 뉴욕 양키스 클럽하우스 매니저로 활동 중인 라이언 올스테인 씨에게 그의 평가를 들어봤다.

올스테인은 팀에 짧은 기간 머문 로저스와 깊게 친해질 시간은 없었지만 그럼에도 그가 기억하는 로저스는 친하지 않은 사람에게도 기본 예의 범절을 지켰다.

올스테인은 "지난해 처음 로저스가 시즌 중 클럽하우스로 찾아왔을 땐 그저 조용한 선수였다"고 회상했다. 로저스는 지난해 7월 31일 웨이버 공시를 통해 토론토 블루제이스에서 양키스 유니폼으로 갈아입었다. 그러나 곧바로 "하지만 그를 한번 알고 나면 쉽게 친해질 수 있는 사람임을 알 수 있다. 사실 그는 매우 유쾌한 사람이다"라고 덧붙이며 로저스의 매력을 전했다. 한국에서 적응하려면 문화를 받아들일 준비가 돼 있어야 하는데, 그가 양키스에 남긴 필드 밖의 인상대로라면 적응에는 문제가 없다는 주장이다.

경기장 밖에선 동료들을 웃게할 재주도 있다. 올스테인은 로저스의 특이한 점을 꼽으며 "우리에겐 그저 일회용 컵은 물을 마신 후 버리는 물건이다. 그러나 로저스는 일회용 컵을 가지고 하나의 작품을 만들어낸다. 흥미로운 것들을 많이 만들어 내더라"며 "로저스에게 이에 관해 꼭 물어보길 바란다"고 그의 숨겨진 손재주를 기억했다.

끝으로 "그를 좋아하게 될 거다. 그는 매우 겸손하며 친화력이 좋은, 같이 어울리면 주변을 즐겁게 해주는 친구다"라고 확신에 찬 어투로 말했다.

Esmil Rogers

It is pretty safe to say almost every Korean baseball fan have not heard of the name Esmil Rogers, who has compiled a 5.59 ERA over parts of seven seasons in the majors. Rogers made 18 relief appearances with the Yankees earlier this season and posted a 6.27 ERA and 31/14 K/BB ratio over 33 innings.

That changed almost over a week as he has thrown two complete games after signing with the Hanhwa Eagles for $0.7 million. Rogers debuted as a starting pitcher against the LG Twins on August 6th, 2015, pitching a complete game. His second game as a starting pitcher for Hanwha Eagles was against the KT Wiz on August 11th, 2015, pitching a shutout game with 108 pitches.

Two complete games in a row as a debuted starting pitcher was the first record of the Korean Baseball Organization. In his third start against the Samsung Lions however, Rogers gave up four runs in 7 1/3 innings while striking out eight batters. Although he gave up four runs in this outing, two of the runs he gave up were scored after he left the game. 

Although Rogers was a reliever with the Yankees earlier in the season, he was brought up as a starter in the Minors with the Colorado Rockies. As he made a major league debut with the Rockies in 2009, he remained as a starter for two more years before making a transition to the bullpen. Therefore, Rogers was able to shift back to starting when he came to the Hanhwa Eagles. Rogers overall, was very impressive and looks like he will continue to dominate the Korean Baseball League.

Rogers mostly throws fastballs and sliders, with the occasional cutter, curveball and changeup. His fastball averages 94 mph with a good down movement but when he worked exclusively as a reliever, the average went up to 96 mph. He has played for the Colorado Rockies, Cleveland Indians, Toronto Blue Jays and New York Yankees before joining the Korean Baseball Organization. To obtain more knowledge about the newest star in the league, I’ve interviewed with a current clubhouse manager of the New York Yankees Ryan Ornstein about Esmil Rogers as a person off the field.

According to Ornstein, he and Rogers did not have a deep relationship but Rogers always treated him with respect and class.“Esmil Rogers was a quite guy when he first came to the clubhouse in the middle of the season last year,” Ornstein said about Rogers, who was claimed off the waivers by the New York Yankees from the Toronto Blue Jays on July 31st, 2014. “But once you get to know the guy, he is easy to get along with and he’s actually really funny.”

By what Ornstein is saying, it seems like Rogers will be able to get along with his new teammates and adjust to the unfamiliar and overseas life in Korea. It’s always vital for foreign players to be open to the whole new culture in Korea when they are signed to play baseball but it appears Rogers will be able to follow the smooth transition on-the-field he has made to the off-the-field as well.

Ornstein also remembered that Rogers had non-baseball related skills which made his teammates laugh. “For us, a paper cup is just a paper cup. It's used for drinking and then it’s thrown away. But for Esmil, a paper cup is an art. You guys should ask him about it because he makes some interesting stuff with plastic cups.” Ornstein said about Rogers’ secretive skills. “You guys will love this guy, he’s humble, easygoing, kind and fun guy to be around.”
