[이승원의 ML 돋보기] 이대호에 대한 ML의 냉정한 평가

한국프로야구와 일본프로야구를 통해 자신이 아시아 최고 타자 중 한 명임을 입증한 이대호. 이제 만 33세인 그가 메이저리그 문을 두드리고 있다. 이대호는 지난해 31홈런을 포함 .282/.368/.524(타율/출루율/장타율)을 남기며 최고의 한 해를 보냈다.

미네소타 트윈스와 계약에 합의한 박병호와 곧 볼티모어 오리올스와의 발표를 앞둔 김현수는 빅리그 유니폼으로 갈아입을 준비를 마쳤다. 그렇다면 대체 왜 이대호처럼 실력 검증을 마친 선수의 계약 소식이 들려오지 않는 것일까.

올해 겨울 이적 시장 1루수에선 29세의 크리스 데이비스가 단연 눈에 띈다. 데이비스는 2015시즌 47개의 홈런을 때려낸 거포다. 아직 보금자리를 찾지 못했다. 데이비스 외에도 시장에 나온 1루수로는 크리스 카터, 페드로 알바레즈, 아이크 데이비스, 저스틴 모노 등이 있다.

내셔널리그 구단 고위 관계자는 "메이저리그 진출을 원하는 이대호의 올겨울 이적시장 가장 큰 경쟁자는 크리스 카터다. 카터와 이대호는 모두 우타자라는데 있다"며 "카터는 빅리그에서 파워를 검증받았다. 그러나 그의 높은 삼진 비율이 눈에 밟히는 팀에 이대호가 들어갈 수 있다"고 설명했다.

그러나 현재 메이저리그에서 이대호의 가치는 기존 예상에 못 미칠 전망이다. 고위 관계자는 "이대호는 너무 느리고 좁은 수비 범위로 수비수로서의 가치가 부족하다"고 설명했다. 또 "메이저리그 팀들은 (선수 영입 시) 점점 더 수비 부분에 가치를 두고 있다. 이대호의 가치가 높게 측정되지 않는 이유다"고 강조했다.

메이저리그 스카우트들은 이미 한국과 일본에서 활약한 이대호의 월등한 실력에 대해 알고 있었다. 그러나 미국 땅을 밟은 다른 한국 선수와는 다르게 이대호는 지명타자로 기용될 가능성이 유력하다. 이는 곧 기타 선수들에 비해 선수에 대한 구단의 관심을 떨어뜨린다.

이와 같은 점을 고려할 때, 이대호의 가능성 있는 행선지는 어디일까.

1. 휴스턴 애스트로스

올해 휴스턴의 1루를 책임져주던 크리스 카터가 시장으로 떠났다. 여기에 구단은 지난 시즌 플레이오프에 진출하며 '리빌딩 모드'에서 탈피한 상태다. 

그러나 애스트로스는 여전히 스몰 마켓이다. 때문에 이대호와 같은 비교적 낮은 몸값의 선수에겐 모험을 걸 수 있다. 에반 게티스와 마윈 곤잘레즈가 각각 지명타자와 1루수로 로스터에 이름을 올리고 있지만, 이대호가 합류해 3명이서 2자리를 놓고 교체 출전하는 것도 가능한 시나리오다.

2. 볼티모어 오리올스

김현수와의 계약 발표를 목전에 둔 볼티모어가 한 해 2명의 한국 선수를 영입한다? 김현수와 2년 계약에 합의한 것으로 알려진 볼티모어지만 이대호의 영입 역시 가능하다. 이적 시장에 나간 크리스 데이비스 단속에 실패할 경우 1루 또는 지명타자 자리가 공석이다. 얼마 전 볼티모어 유니폼을 입은 마크 트럼보가 1루를 책임진다는 가정하에 이대호가 지명타자로 들어갈 수 있다.

3. 샌디에이고 파드리스

욘더 알론소를 트레이드로 오클랜드 애슬레틱스에 떠나보낸 샌디에이고는 현재 1루가 비어있다. 또한 타 구단 단장들에 비해 평소 수비 가치에 큰 비중을 두지 않는 A.J 프렐러 단장이다. 지난 시즌 넓은 외야에 윌 마이어스를 중견수로 내보냈다. 따라서 샌디에이고는 이대호를 들일 가능성이 있다.

The Evaluation of Lee Dae Ho by MLB Scout and Three Possible Destinations

Lee Dae-ho proved in both KBO and NPB that he is one of the best hitters in Asia. Now at the age of 33, the Korean slugger is looking for an opportunity in the ML as last year was his best in Japan, as he slashed .282/.368/.524 with 31 home runs.

His fellow countrymen, Park Byung-ho and Kim Hyun Hyun-soo already reached agreements with the Minnesota Twins and Baltimore Orioles respectively. But, what is taking so long for a proven player such as Lee Dae-ho, to complete a deal with a ML team?

The current market for first basemen this off-season is led by Chris Davis, a 29 year-old who smacked 47 HRs last year, is yet to sign with a team. After Davis, veteran first basemen, Chris Carter, Pedro Alvarez, Ike Davis and Justin Morneau, remain in the market.

“The biggest competition for Lee Dae-ho is obviously Chris Carter as they are both right-handed hitters,” an NL exec said on the current market for Lee. “Chris Carter is a proven power bat in ML but Lee Dae-ho could be a fit to organizations concerning Carter’s strike out rate.”

However, the current value of Lee Dae-ho in ML might be less than what he originally expected. “Lee is too slow and doesn’t have defensive value as he has no range at first,” the aforementioned exec said. “ML teams value more and more on defensive metrics nowadays and for that reason, Lee’s value is not very high right now.”

MLB scouts have long been aware of the disparity in talent between the two Asian leagues but unlike other Korean players, Lee is seen as a primarily DH in ML which could lead to less interest in him compare to other players. 
In that case, what teams could be a possible fit for Lee Dae-ho?

1. Houston Astros: Their everyday first baseman from last season, Chris Carter is gone. The franchise is through with a rebuilding mode as the Astros made the playoffs in 2015. But, the Astros are still a small market team and could risk in an inexpensive option in Lee Dae-ho. Evan Gattis and Marwin Gonzalez are still on the Astros roster as a DH and first baseman but it is possible for Lee, Gattis and Gonzalez to split time between those two spots.

2. Baltimore Orioles: Could the Orioles really take in two Korean players in the same off-season? After reportedly signing Kim Hyun-soo to a 2-yr deal, Lee Dae-ho is a possibility also. If Chris Davis is not retained, one of the 1B/DH spot is open. Recently traded Mark Trumbo will likely cover up first base and Lee could find a spot in the line-up as a DH.

3. San Diego Padres: After trading Yonder Alonso to the Oakland Athletics, the Padres currently do not have a first baseman on their roster. Lee could be a good fit in San Diego as their GM, AJ Preller, is not known to value defense as much as other GMs in the league, shown last year as Will Myers played CF in their spacious park last year.
