[ML 스카우트의 메이저스토리] KBO의 경기 레벨은 어느 정도일까

 
요즘 한국 야구계에 논쟁이 끊이지 않는 이슈가 하나 있다. 메이저리그 사무국이 KBO에 ‘선수 포스팅 금액을 800만 달러(약 93억원)로 제한하자’고 한 제안이다. KBO에서 7시즌을 채운 선수는 포스팅 시스템을 통해 메이저리그에 진출할 수 있고, 최근 이를 통해 미국으로 진출하는 선수들이 늘어나는 추세였다.
 
메이저리그 팀이 포스팅을 통해 선수를 데려가는 방법은 비공개 경매와도 같다. 해당 선수를 원하는 팀들이 비공개로 액수를 써서 내고, 이 중 최고액을 써낸 팀만 공개돼 선수를 데려가는 방식이다. 하지만 KBO의 팀 혹은 선수가 이 금액의 계약을 원하지 않을 경우 30일 안에 이를 알리면 메이저리그 팀은 선수 영입을 철회할 수 있다.
 
지금까지 3명의 KBO 출신 선수들이 포스팅 시스템을 통해 메이저리그 팀과 계약을 했다. LA 다저스가 2012년 2573만 달러로 류현진을 데려갔다. 2015년 1월에는 피츠버그 파이어리츠가 500만2015 달러에 강정호를 영입했다. 그리고 미네소타 트윈스가 박병호를 1285만 달러에 포스팅에 성공했다.
 
2013년 MLB와 NPB(일본프로야구)는 포스팅 금액 상한선을 2000만 달러(약 232억원)로 제한하는데 합의했다. 통상적으로 일본프로야구의 수준이 한국보다 다소 높은 것으로 인식되고 있다. 하지만, 그렇다고 해서 일본이 2000만 달러의 포스팅 상한선을 두고 있는데 한국의 상한선이 800만 달러가 되는 건 합당한가?
 
KBO리그의 평균적인 선수 레벨과 미국을 비교해 보자. 미국의 경우 현재 존재하는 6개의 마이너리그까지 통합해서 따져 보겠다. 다음은 미국의 마이너리그에 대한 간단한 소개다.
 
트리플A: 메이저리그에 바로 도전할 준비가 돼 있는 선수들이 모인 곳.
 
더블A: ‘좀 더 높은 수준의 마이너’로 가기 위한 관문. 하위리그에서 더블A로 점프하는 게 가장 어렵다고 알려져 있다
 
하이A – 로우A : 싱글A에 속한 두 가지 레벨. 그렇다면 이 두 가지 레벨은 뭐가 다를까?
싱글A는 프로야구 선수가 되고 싶어하는 많은 유망주들이 가장 먼저 거쳐가는 관문이다. 유망주들은 최소 5개월 이상, 140경기 이상의 제대로 된 풀 시즌을 치러보기 전까진 진짜 프로의 맛을 알 수 없다.
보통, 두 레벨의 차이는 로우A의 선수들은 야구에 대해 덜 익숙한 자원들이다. 마치 고교 드래프트를 거친 선수들 수준이거나 나이 어린 외국 선수들이 대부분이다. 그러나 하이A 선수들은 전형적인 대학 드래프트 픽으로 뽑힌 선수 수준이다. 혹은 몇 시즌을 치른 경험이 있는 외국 선수들이 이 레벨에 있다.
 
쇼트 시즌 - 루키 레벨 : 이 두 가지 레벨은 마이너리그 레벨 중에서도 가장 낮은 수준이다. 이 두 레벨의 경우 6월 전까진 시즌이 시작하지 않는다. 이곳의 선수들은 6월 이후 새로운 드래프트를 통해 채워지고, 아니면 젊은 외국인선수들로 구성돼 있다. 이 두 레벨의 차이점은 하이A와 로우A의 차이점과 비슷하다. 더 어린 선수들이 루키 레벨에서 뛰고, 조금 더 나이가 있는 선수들이 쇼트 시즌으로 향한다.


평균적인 KBO의 선수들은 한 가지 확실한 기술을 갖고 있지만, 제2의 기술이 부족한 것으로 평가된다. 예를 들어 스피드가 좋은 외야수는 콘택트 능력이나 파워, 혹은 어깨 힘이 부족한 경우가 많다. 투수의 경우 패스트볼이 좋은 경우 제2의 구종이 없는 선수가 대부분이다. 2개 이상의 숙련된 기술을 갖고 있는 선수는 KBO 리그에서 스타 대접을 받는다.
 
KBO의 평균적인 선수와 기술을 마이너리그 선수들과 비교해 보면, 하이A 수준과 가장 흡사하다고 볼 수 있다. 하이A의 선수들은 메이저리그에 갈 수 있는 잠재력이 있지만 아직은 유망주이고, 메이저리그에 올라가도 좀 더 경험이 필요한 백업선수 취급을 받는다.
 
KBO선수들이 메이저리그에 점점 더 많이 진출하고 있다는 건 공공연한 사실이며, 한국 야구는 그 어느 때보다도 잠재력 있는 시장이자 팜으로 평가 받는다. 또한, KBO 선수들을 일본 선수들과 비교해 봐도 한국 선수들이 파워 면에서나 체격 면에서나 일본 보다도 메이저리그 선수들과 비슷하다.
비록 전체적인 수준을 비교할 때는 한국이 일본보다 못할지 몰라도, 메이저리그 스카우트들은 향후 메이저리그 팀에서 뛸 선수들을 찾기 위해 일본보다는 한국을 더 많이 찾아갈 것이다.

KBO’s level of play
Recently, a controversial topic regarding $8 million limit on players who are eligible for posting have been brought up by the Major League Baseball (MLB). Currently, KBO player is eligible to be posted after at least seven full seasons.
At this time, MLB teams submit uncapped bids for the player in a silent auction and the team with the highest bid earns the chance to negotiate with that player. If a contract is not agreed between the MLB club and KBO player within 30 days, the posting fee goes back to the MLB club.
In the past, three KBO players have used the posting system and wound up signing a Major League contract. The Los Angeles Dodgers invested $25.73 million just in posting for left-hander Ryu Hyun-jin in 2012. In January 2015, the Pittsburgh Pirates with $5 million dollars for infielder Kang Jung-ho was enough to win the bid. Lastly, the Minnesota Twins won the bidding for Park Byung-ho after submitting a $12.85 million bid this past offseason.

In 2013, MLB and Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) agreed to a posting system of $20 million cap. NPB is considered a higher level of league than KBO but is $8 million dollar limit fair for KBO clubs?
Let’s look at the average level of play in KBO and compare it to the US players. A total of six minor league levels exist currently.
Triple-A:  A combination of baseball’s most major league-ready prospects, 4-A players and career minor leaguers.
Double-A: The entrance to the “upper minors,” the jump to Double-A tends to be the most difficult for prospects, and tells us the most about them.
High-A vs. Low-A: What are the difference between these two Single-A levels?
A-ball could be said as the real first season for many prospects experiencing professional baseball. Of course, the prospects spend time in short-season or rookie leagues first but a player doesn’t get a true feel for the world of professional baseball until he plays in a full-season league and experiences the grind of a five-month, 140-plus game season which the lower level do not present.
Usually, the differences between the two levels are that Low-A present players with less maturity in baseball, such as high school draft picks or younger international players. However, High-A players are typically college draft picks or bit more seasoned international players.
Short-season and Rookie level: These two levels are the lowest of all minor league levels. These two levels do not start the season until June. Usually, the roster is filled with new draft picks picked in June and young international players.
The different between the two levels are similar with High-A vs. Low-A. Younger players usually play in Rookie level and older prospects head to Short-season.
An average KBO player possesses one skill that he does well but lacks the second skill he needs to have to be a star. For an example, an outfielder with good speed would be short of other skills such as contact, power, or arm strength. On the pitching side, a pitcher with good fastball lacks a secondary pitches or command. Players with two or more skills sets usually are stars in the league.
Comparing average KBO players and their skill sets to the minor league players, High-A could be the most comparable level to the league. High-A level usually consists of players with almost no potential to be a Major Leaguer but it is also filled with potential starters and back-ups in the Majors who need more seasoning.
 It is not a secret that as more KBO players are becoming Major Leaguers, Korean baseball is receiving greater attention than ever. Also, comparing KBO with Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball players, Korean players have more similarities with MLB players in that they rely more on power than finesse.
Although the overall talent of KBO might be much lower than NPB, MLB scouts might find better source of talent in Korea in the future.
