[ML 스카우트의 메이저스토리] 삼성의 또 다른 실수 : 앨런 웹스터

삼성 라이온즈는 지난 시즌 세 명의 선수가 도박 스캔들에 연루되면서 매우 혼란스러운 시간을 보냈다. 결국 삼성은 임창용을 방출했고, 안지만과 윤성환을 어떻게 기용해야 할지 여전히 고민 중이다. 게다가 삼성은 지난 시즌 팀 타선에서 가장 좋은 활약을 했던 야마이코 나바로를 일본 지바 롯데로 떠나보냈다.
 
삼성은 새 외국인 투수로 콜린 벨레스터와 앨런 웹스터를 영입했다. 삼성은 도박 스캔들 때문에 마운드에 적잖은 공백이 생겼고, 이들이 이 공백을 메워야 한다.
 
앨런 웹스터는 과거 보스턴 레드삭스와 애리조나 다이아몬드백스에서 뛰었다. 그는 마이너 무대까지 통틀어 미국에서 총 8시즌 동안 850탈삼진을 기록했다. 삼성은 웹스터가 차우찬과 함께 올 시즌 연승을 이어가거나 연패를 끊어내는 역할을 해줄 것으로 기대하고 있다.
 
그러나 삼성은 앨런 웹스터와 계약할 때 한 가지 실수를 했다. 웹스터는 싱커를 던지는 투수인데, 삼성의 선발 로테이션에서 1선발을 맡을 만한 재목은 아니다. 그는 2012년 다저스가 보스턴 레드삭스와 애드리언 곤잘레스를 포함한 대형 트레이드를 할 때 보스턴으로 이적했다.
 
웹스터는 고등학교 시절 유격수였다. 그러나 메이저리그에서 투수로 뛸 때 문제점이 있었다. 그는 2015시즌 애리조나에서 세 가지 구질을 던졌는데, 투심패스트볼과 슬라이더, 그리고 체인지업이었다. 그의 싱킹패스트볼은 움직임이 매우 많아서 웹스터 자신조차도 제구를 잘 하지 못했다. 두 번째 문제는, 그의 슬라이더와 체인지업이 모두 헛스윙을 유도하는 것이었는데 KBO 심판들은 이 공을 스트라이크로 잡아주지 않았다. (웹스터는 오키나와에서 실시한 연습경기에 두 차례 등판해 2경기 4이닝 7실점으로 부진했다. –역자 주)
 
지난해 메이저리그에서 웹스터는 31이닝 동안 20개의 볼넷을 기록했다. 이전까지 그의 통산기록을 보면, 9이닝 평균 볼넷은 4.99개였지만 지난해엔 볼넷 비율이 더 늘어난 셈이다. 이는 그가 속한 팀에는 적신호였다. 왜 삼성은 이런 기록의 웹스터에게 그렇게 많이 투자했을까?
 
아마도 삼성은 KBO의 타자들이 움직임 많은 패스트볼에 익숙하지 않기 때문에 웹스터를 높게 평가한 듯하다. 웹스터와 비슷한 패스트볼을 던지는 에스밀 로저스(한화)가 자신의 패스트볼을 앞세워 KBO에서 압도적인 모습을 보여주고 있다. 하지만 로저스는 (웹스터와 달리) 스트라이크를 던질 줄 안다.
 
내 판단이 틀릴 수도 있다. 어쩌면 앨런 웹스터는 팀에서 바라듯 삼성의 압도적인 에이스가 될 수도 있다. 그러나 나는 지난 몇 년간 웹스터를 지켜봤다. 내 생각엔 아마도 삼성이 웹스터 때문에 또 하나의 딜레마를 짊어질 듯하다.

Samsung Lions’ another slip: Allen Webster


Following all the mess and dilemma last year with three players’ gambling issues, Samsung Lions released Lim Chang-Yong, but they are still dealing with Ahn Ji-Man and Yoon Sung-Hwan. On top of it, they lost one of the best hitter from last season, Yamaico Navarro and his 48 home runs
Samsung Lions brought in Collin Balester and Allen Webster to man the pitching staff that needs a lot of help currently due to scandals they’ve faced recently. Balesster, who formerly pitched in the Majors and received 500K from Samsung, is not considered as the “ace” of the staff. Rather, it is Allen Webster, who pitched for the Red Sox and Diamondbacks receiving 850K from the Lions, along with free-agent-to-be Cha Woo Chan, are expected to be the guys that stop losing streaks or keep winning streaks going when the season starts.
However, the Lions made a mistake on signing Allen Webster. The sinker thrower is not the type of pitcher you want to bring in as the No.1 pitcher in your rotation. Once one of the top prospects in the game, Webster failed to be pitcher he was supposed to be when he was part of a huge trade between the Dodgers and Red Sox involving Adrian Gonzalez.
 A shortstop in high school, Webster has the stuff to be in the Majors but the command has always been the problem. The former Diamondback throws three pitches: 2-seam fastball, slider and change-up. His sinking fastball moves so much that even himself, Webster cannot control it most times leading to inconsistent command. Secondary stuff, slider and change-up are both swing-and-miss pitches in KBO but what is the point if he is behind the count almost every time.
Last year in the Majors, Webster issued 20 walks in just 31 innings and he owns a career 4.9BB over nine innings which is a red flag for teams. Then, why did the Lions invest so much in Webster?
KBO hitters are not used to fastballs with a lot of movement and that is what Webster definitely possesses that. Similar fastball thrower, Esmil Rogers of Hanhwa Eagles, throws with a lot of movement in his fastball leading for him to dominate KBO hitters but he knows how to throw strikes.
I may be wrong and maybe Allen Webster becomes the “ace” Samsung is expecting him to be. But, from what I’ve seen from Webster over the years, Samsung Lions will have another dilemma with Allen Webster.
