[ML스카우트의 메이저 스토리] 조무근, 차기 메이저리거 될 가능성이 보인다

스카우트들이 사전 지식이 전혀 없는 상태로 어떤 선수를 볼 때, 가장 먼저 보게 되는 것이 체격이다. 그런 맥락에서 kt의 중간계투 조무근은 198cm의 키와 큰 체격으로 눈을 확 잡아끈다.
 
조무근은 상원고등학교와 성균관대를 거쳐 드래프트로 프로야구에 데뷔했다. 성균관대에서 4년을 보낸 뒤 이 체격 큰 오른손 투수는 KBO 신생팀 kt에 선발됐다. 그는 2015년 신인 드래프트 2차 6라운드 전체 54순위로 kt에 입단했다.
 
최근 한 아메리칸 리그 소속의 스카우트(편의상 이하 기사에서는 스카우트 A로 지칭한다)는 조무근에 대해 “그는 성균관대에 있을 때 오직 시속 85마일(137km/h)의 공밖에 던지지 못했다”고 말했다. 그는 “kt는 투수를 정말 잘 키운 거다. 최근 조무근은 더 강하게 공을 던지고, KBO 최고의 투수까지도 될 수 있는 잠재력을 갖췄다”고 덧붙였다.
 
조무근은 프로 첫 시즌인 2015년 중간계투로 뛰며 평균자책점 1.88을 기록했다. 그는 향후 선발로 뛸 가능성도 있고, 혹은 리그 최고의 중간계투가 될 수도 있다.
 
스카우트 A는 조무근에 대해 “직구는 89~92마일(143~148km/h) 정도를 던지고, 결정구로 슬라이더를 던진다. 조무근이 그 외의 또 다른 구종을 개발한다면 메이저리그 진출 가능성까지 내다볼 수 있는 선발 투수가 될 것이다”라고 설명했다.
 
조무근은 올해 만 25세다. 그는 직구와 슬라이더 외의 또 다른 구종을 개발하기 위해 노력하고 있다. 올 봄, 그는 체인지업이나 스플리터를 추가해 무기를 다양화하려는 노력을 한창 이어가고 있는 것이다.
 
최근 kt의 애리조나 캠프에서 실시했던 프리배팅에서 조무근은 동료의 라인드라이브 타구에 정강이를 맞아 살짝 절뚝거리는 모습을 보였다. 그러나 그의 플레이는 매우 좋아보였고, 타구를 맞기 전까지의 투구는 동료들로부터 “와우”라는 감탄사를 이끌어내기도 했다. 조무근의 부상은 가벼운 정도였다고 한다.
 
조무근이 올 시즌 얼마나 성장할지, 그리고 그가 차기 한국인 메이저리거가 될 수 있을지 지켜보는 건 매우 멋진 일이다. 스카우트 A는 “난 조무근이 투수로서 얼마나 발전할지 계속 지켜볼 것이다. 개인적으로는, 조무근이 새로운 구종을 성공적으로 개발해서 선발 투수로 뛰길 바란다”고 말했다.
 
KBO에서 뛰는 선수들이 메이저리그에 직행하는 최근 트렌드 때문에 빅리그의 스카우트들이 점점 더 한국 프로야구에 관심을 보이고 있다. 비록 조무근이 현실적으로는 향후 포스팅을 하거나 FA 자격을 얻기까지 시간이 한참 남았다고 해도, 몇몇 스카우트들은 계속 조무근이 얼마나 발전할지에 대해 관심을 기울이며 지켜보게 될 것이다.

Cho Mu-Geun could be the next MLB prospect

When scouts look at bunch of unknown players, the first thing scouts notice is the physical. Cho Mu-Geun, a reliever for KT, definitely gets your attention with his 198 cm and big, strong body of his.
Cho Mu-Geun graduated from Sang-Won High School and went on to Sung Kyun Kwan University after not getting drafted. After four years at Sung Kyun Kwan University, the big right-hander was finally drafted by the newest team in the KBO, KT Wizards, in the 6^th round in 2015.
“Cho Mu-Geun only threw around 85 MPH when I followed him at Sung Kyun Kwan University,” a current AL scout said. “KT did a really nice job with him because Cho now throws a lot harder and he has a chance to be one of the best pitchers in KBO now.”
In his first season in the league, Cho posted impressive 1.88 ERA as a reliever. There is a possibility that Cho becomes a starter in the future but this upcoming season, Cho will serve as one of the best relievers in KBO.
“Cho throws his fastball around 89-92 MPH and a slider that he uses for out-pitch,” the aforementioned scout said. “If Cho is able to develop a third-pitch, he could be a legitimate MLB prospect as a starter.” The 25 year-old pitcher, is believed to be working on a possible third pitch, change-up or split, to make his arsenal diverse this spring.
During a live BP in Arizona Camp, Cho Mu-Geun took a line-drive to his shin from one of his teammates and was seen limping off the field.  However, he showed and looked very good, drawing “wows” from his teammates, before the line-drive hit the big right-hander. Cho’s injury is not known to be serious.
It is fascinating to see how Cho develops this season and beyond as he could be the next MLB prospect. “I will definitely pay attention to Cho and how he evolves as a pitcher,” the aforementioned scout continued. “Personally, I would like to see him develop a third-pitch and become a starter in the league.”
With the trend of KBO players going straight to the MLB, a lot of ML scouts are paying more and more attention to the league. Although Cho Mu-Geun is long ways until he is eligible to be posted or become a free agent, some of the scouts are noticing how Cho is developing into a legitimate MLB prospect.
