Cultural problems the Korean players face in MLB

When a player from Asia is signed by a Major League Baseball team, not only is the team adding a new player to its organization, but it is bringing a person to start a new life in a foreign environment. Once the player arrives, he must acclimate to life in America while overcoming unique cultural, social and physical challenges.

To get into the details of it, I met up with a current minor league player for the Oakland Athletics, Seongmin Kim, on June 26, 2015. Seongmin Kim was signed in 2011 out of Yatap high school and is in his fourth year in the Minor Leagues.

First, the language difference between Korea and United States poses a huge challenge for Korean players. “The Latin players have their own groups and also there are usually Spanish coaches and managers in every organization but there isn’t anyone Korean players can talk to.” Seongmin Kim spoke about the clubhouse situation.
When asked about the life outside of baseball, Seongmin added, “We practice so much more in Korea compare to here so I get bored sometimes. Therefore, I watch a lot of Korean TV shows and study English online.”

In addition, the nutrition changes can be unexpected surprise for Korean players newly located to the United States. Usually, Korean players are left without any choice but a junk food because of the lack of knowledge with American food. Majority of Korean players consume a simple, unhealthy, and unsatisfying diet, which can affect energy levels and emotions, which in turn impacts their on-field performance. “I know some players lost some weight because they couldn’t eat well and it affected their strength and stamina.” Seongmin said about the nutrition issues of Korean players.

Moreover, many Korean players come to the United States for the first time when they arrive to play baseball. “Moving to a new environment was really difficult as I didn’t know anything about the culture here.” Seongmin Kim said. I believe the proper transition assistance resources from the MLB teams must be utilized in order to protect the investments made in these players and maximize their potential to succeed.
